Recent Events: Cornerstone and Doctoral Training Conference 2023

  • The final event for the Cornerstone partnership before it evolves into the Mechanical Excellence Partnership took place at the University of Nottingham from the 24th to the 26th April, 2023. Over 130 people attended over three days to celebrate the achievements of the longstanding partnership. Beyond the Mechanical Excellence Partnership, which will continue, many other projects have been secured, including (but not limited to) the HEAVEN project which is part of Clean Aviation. Updates on CornerStone

CornerStone continues to deliver highly interesting and important results. Some recent highlights
have been:
WP1: – Demonstration that the sequence of application of normal and shear forces at a contact has a
profound influence on the life of the contact:
WP2:- Novel designs of clamp-release mechanisms enables tight synchronisation of tension and
torsion waves in a split Hopkinson bar for measuring material properties at high strain rates
WP3:- The “HERMES” testrig is now running and delivering results. This comprises a large evacuated
chamber containing a “GNOME engine” (helicopter engine) bristling with instrumentation.
WP4:- Coupled models characterising the aero-elastic interactions have been achieved wherein the
(finite-element) mesh used for the structural parts need not match the (finite-difference) mesh for
the fluid.
WP5:- Machine-learning approaches are now working to incorporate highly representative models
of turbulence within conventional CFD models to accelerate computation
WP6:- New concepts are emerging and (going through patent process) enabling semi-passive
vibration control of electrical machines and extending the 23-year-old concept of “bridge-
configured-windings” to be applicable to machines with rotational symmetries other than 2.
